Things got a little more automated at Asheboro City and Uwharrie Charter Academy’s elementary schools recently as Randolph Community College’s Industrial Maintenance Technician (IMT) Apprentices and Early Childhood Education (ECE) students visited local classrooms Thursday, Nov. 16, to teach all about robots. Students were read “Pete the Cat: Robo-Pete” by James Dean, got to try their hand at a robotic arm made of Legos, and then made their own robotic arm out of popsicle sticks.

RCC community: Prioritizing safety for a secure future

Each year, in accordance with the Campus Security Act of 1990 and the Cleary Act, Randolph Community College publishes a Campus Safety and Security Report along with conducting an annual review of all campus safety plans. The report was presented at the College’s Board of Trustees Meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 20, with only one incident over the past three years and zero unfounded crimes.

With new leadership, RCC opens 61st school year

The Asheboro Campus of Randolph Community College was buzzing with excitement Friday, Aug. 11, as the entire college community came together for RCC’s annual Fall Convocation. The event kicked off the College’s 61st school year and was marked by the debut of President Dr. Shah Ardalan, RCC’s seventh leader. Prior to the convocation, a breakfast meet and greet with President Ardalan was hosted at the Armadillo Café, bringing together the College’s dedicated faculty and staff, and setting the tone for the academic year ahead. Students returned to campus Tuesday, Aug. 15, with the start of RCC’s Fall Semester as the College is seeing a growth in enrollment post-pandemic.

RCC Digital Literacy program changing lives

In an ever-increasing paperless world, knowing your way around a computer can not only help boost your job prospects, but also help you navigate shopping and paying bills. This spring, Randolph Community College’s College and Career Readiness (CCR) department launched a Digital Literacy program. Since its inception, its students have earned 201 certificates using the NorthStar program and 42 students have earned their nationally recognized NorthStar certification.

Lindsey Pizzola is enrolled in Randolph Community College’s Adult Basic Life Skills Education (ABLE) program, which helps adults with developmental disabilities. Students take academic-based classes that focus on helping them become as independent as possible. That extends into life outside of RCC as many of the College’s ABLE students also have jobs. For Pizzola, it’s folding paper towels and unwrapping canvases every Tuesday at The Preppy Possum, a paint-and-sip studio in Asheboro.

Randolph Community College is a part of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Fellows Program (CJFP), which funds fellowships for high school senior graduates. In order to qualify, students must have exhibited high academic achievement, a history of service to the school and community, and a desire to serve the state of North Carolina in a field within the criminal justice profession. The 50-year-old student has had an uphill battle, emotionally and physically, from food insecurity to multiple surgeries on her feet to asthma and diabetes. None of that is keeping her from earning her degree at RCC. Along the way, Sherrod has had a constant cheerleader in her corner: Pam Wiggins — one of two Success Coaches at RCC, who, along with fellow coach Dr. Jae Archer, is making a marked difference in not only keeping students in class, but also making sure underserved student populations stay in school.

RCC holds ribbon cutting for Welding Center expansion

Randolph Community College held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday as the College increased its number of welding booths at the Archdale Center to 31. Approximately 2,000 square feet of classroom and office space was converted into lab space to accommodate more students.

Pathways Camps fun, eye-opening for participants

Larry Reid of Asheboro was recently appointed as a new member of the Randolph Community College Board of Trustees. Reid signed his oath of office at the July 18 meeting of the Board held in room 301 of the Administration/Education Building on the Asheboro Campus. Five of Randolph Community College’s Board of Trustees and two members of the RCC Foundation’s Board were on hand Friday, Aug. 16, to welcome the more than 200 RCC faculty and staff members gathered for the school’s fall convocation in the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center auditorium. The College opened its 57th year when classes began Monday.
