In an exciting development, the Randolph County Commissioners wholeheartedly endorsed Randolph Community College’s ambitious plans for a new Liberty Center. During Monday’s meeting, the commissioners unanimously approved the College’s funding request, allocating $1,498,000 for the acquisition of 22 acres in Liberty to establish a cutting-edge new center.

Things got a little more automated at Asheboro City and Uwharrie Charter Academy’s elementary schools recently as Randolph Community College’s Industrial Maintenance Technician (IMT) Apprentices and Early Childhood Education (ECE) students visited local classrooms Thursday, Nov. 16, to teach all about robots. Students were read “Pete the Cat: Robo-Pete” by James Dean, got to try their hand at a robotic arm made of Legos, and then made their own robotic arm out of popsicle sticks.

The event kicked off the College’s 61st school year and was marked by the debut of President Dr. Shah Ardalan, RCC’s seventh leader. Randolph Community College student and Apprenticeship Randolph apprentice Caleb Baudoin has always wanted to follow in his grandpa’s and dad’s footsteps. Both have been machinists since they were 19. And neither toots his own horn. But, Baudoin’s coworkers at Hubbell Industrial Controls (HIC) took notice of not only the apprentice’s work ethic, but also his teamwork, enthusiasm, patience, and willingness to learn. The result was Baudoin earning the Outstanding Registered Apprentice Award at the annual ApprenticeshipNC Conference, held virtually April 27-28.

When someone entered the small classroom at Randolph Community College’s Chevy Centre on Saturday, May 8, they saw a table holding a red, white, and blue cake along with patriotic plates, cups, and napkins; they heard “God Bless the U.S.A.” playing on the screen; and they were greeted by students dressed to the nines and smiling eyes behind masks. Earnestine Sherrod isn’t your typical college student. Then again, Randolph Community College isn’t your typical college. The 50-year-old student has had an uphill battle, emotionally and physically, from food insecurity to multiple surgeries on her feet to asthma and diabetes. None of that is keeping her from earning her degree at RCC. Along the way, Sherrod has had a constant cheerleader in her corner: Pam Wiggins — one of two Success Coaches at RCC, who, along with fellow coach Dr. Jae Archer, is making a marked difference in not only keeping students in class, but also making sure underserved student populations stay in school.
