Board of Trustees honors Mac Sherrill as Trustee Emeritus at May meeting

The Randolph Community College Board of Trustees voted unanimously Thursday, May 15, to bestow the honor of Trustee Emeritus upon Mac Sherrill, a stalwart advocate for two-year education and retiring Board member, during its regular meeting in the Martha Luck Comer Foundation Conference Center.
Sherrill's recognition marks a significant moment in RCC’s history. With a remarkable 28 years of service — including 12 years as Board Chair and six as Vice Chair — Sherrill’s legacy is deeply embedded in the College’s growth and success. He also played a critical role in the College’s pandemic response, saw the Nursing program achieve a record four-year 100% NCLEX pass rate, and helped secure RCC’s No. 1 state ranking by two separate entities and a second-in-the-nation ranking by SmartAsset.
“Mac Sherrill’s commitment to Randolph Community College is the gold standard of leadership and advocacy in higher education,” RCC President/CEO Dr. Shah Ardalan said. “His strategic vision and tireless dedication have helped shape RCC into one of the most respected institutions in the state and beyond. Honoring him as Trustee Emeritus serves as a permanent reminder of his remarkable service and influence on this college.”
His tenure saw the launch of transformative initiatives like Apprenticeship Randolph and the Industrial Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship programs, both designed to bolster workforce readiness and respond to the needs of local industries.
“It is difficult to find people who are willing to volunteer and make a commitment to an organization as Mac Sherrill has for Randolph Community College,” Board Chair Reynolds Lisk Jr. said. “We are pleased to honor Mac at tonight’s board meeting with ‘Trustee Emeritus' status for his tireless commitment, service, and dedication to RCC and Community Colleges across North Carolina.”
Sherrill's contributions extended far beyond campus. As a respected community leader, he served as president of the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce, chaired the Randolph County Economic Development Corporation, and held leadership roles with the United Way, American Red Cross, and the Lions Club. At the state level, he was a member of the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges and served two four-year terms on the Executive Board of the N.C. Association of Community College Trustees. Sherrill was elected a member of the Regional Nominating Committee for the Southern Region of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) in 2016 and participated in nine national ACCT conferences.
Sherrill’s influence was central in RCC's preparation to support Toyota Battery Manufacturing, North Carolina — a $14 billion investment expected to bring 5,000 jobs to the region.
RCC has now added Sherrill’s name to a prestigious list of Trustee Emeritus honorees, joining Jack Lail, Martha Luck Comer Johnson, and Sen. Jerry Tillman.
