RCC Radiography students advocate for licensure bill at North Carolina General Assembly

Randolph Community College Radiography students, alongside program faculty, traveled to Raleigh on Tuesday, April 15, to meet with their senators and representatives in support of Senate Bill 415 and House Bill 590, legislation that would require licensure for radiologic technologists in North Carolina.
During their visit to the state capital, students had the unique opportunity to speak directly with lawmakers, sharing firsthand why licensure is critical for ensuring high standards of care and patient safety in medical imaging. The group also toured several key state buildings, gaining insight into the legislative process and their future roles as healthcare professionals.
Dr. Shah Ardalan, President/CEO of RCC, praised the students for their leadership and civic engagement and recognized state Legislators for taking the time to engage with our students and thoughtfully consider their perspectives.
“This is education in action,” he said. “Our students are not just preparing for careers — they are already making an impact. Advocating for licensure demonstrates their commitment to professionalism, patient safety, and the integrity of healthcare in North Carolina. RCC is proud to empower students who are not only skilled but also bold enough to lead.”
Senate Bill 415 and House Bill 590 aim to bring North Carolina in line with most other states by implementing licensure standards for those performing radiologic procedures, protecting patients by ensuring only properly educated and credentialed technologists are authorized to operate advanced imaging equipment. More than 75% of states in the US have licensure requirements for imaging professionals.
The Radiography program at RCC prepares students with both academic and clinical training to meet the growing demand for skilled imaging professionals. This trip highlights the college’s commitment to real-world learning and advocacy — a cornerstone of RCC’s mission to develop relevant, career-centered leaders for the workforce.
