Board of Trustees adopts new meeting schedule and location

The Randolph Community College (RCC) Board of Trustees approved a new schedule and location for its regular meetings during its Thursday, Sept. 17, meeting.

Under the new schedule, the Board will hold six regular meetings each year — in September, November, January, March, April, and June — with special meetings called when necessary. The Board previously met 10 times per year, with no regular meetings in July or December.

Regular meetings will also move from the Martha Luck Comer Foundation Conference Center to the Allied Health Center on RCC’s Asheboro Campus. The meetings will begin at 5 p.m.

The revised schedule establishes a focused annual rhythm for the Board’s required and recommended business. Meetings will be aligned with key responsibilities throughout the academic and fiscal year, including organizational matters, student success and program performance, financial and enrollment reviews, strategic planning, the annual evaluation of the College president, and year-end business.

“When I joined RCC in June 2023, the Board was meeting six times per year,” President/CEO Dr. Shah Ardalan said. “We increased the schedule to 10 meetings annually because several important matters required greater Trustee involvement, including reviewing and updating governing documents and developing the College’s strategic plan. With much of that foundational work completed, the Board and the College are well positioned to return to six regular meetings per year.”

Board Chair Chris Yow said the change will allow the Board to concentrate its regular meetings around the College’s key governance responsibilities while maintaining consistent communication between meetings.

“Trustees will continue to receive information throughout the year,” Yow said. “I will provide monthly electronic updates to the Board, including during months when no regular meeting is scheduled, so Trustees remain informed about College business and prepared to act when needed. Special meetings also may be called whenever an issue requires Board action.”

Beginning with the next annual meeting cycle, the September meeting will serve as the Board’s organizational meeting. The schedule complies with North Carolina law requiring community college trustees to elect their officers at the first meeting held on or after July 1.
