RCC awarded $250,000 to expand advanced emergency medical training
Randolph Community College (RCC) has been awarded $250,000 through North Carolina’s High-Cost Workforce Start-Up Grant to expand advanced emergency medical training and strengthen the region’s emergency response workforce.
Approved by the State Board of Community Colleges on Oct. 16, the funding will support the development of an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Initial course and an AEMT-to-Paramedic Bridge. The expanded training opportunities are expected to begin in June 2027 at RCC’s Asheboro and Archdale locations.
“This investment is about more than expanding a training program. It is about making sure the people who respond when our communities need them most have the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience to perform at the highest level,” President/CEO Dr. Shah Ardalan said. “Our responsibility is to prepare graduates who are ready to contribute from day one, whether they're entering the workforce or advancing in their careers.”
The grant will help RCC purchase specialized simulation and instructional equipment, support instructional personnel, and cover costs associated with accreditation, certification, and faculty development. Students will gain hands-on experience with equipment used in airway management, cardiac care, patient monitoring, and other emergency medical procedures.
“Providing advanced emergency medical training takes more than a classroom,” Director of EMS Programs Kimberly Jeffries said. “It requires specialized equipment, hands-on learning opportunities, and experienced instructors who are dedicated to preparing students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to excel in the field of emergency medicine.”
The expansion will provide additional opportunities for current EMTs, firefighters, public safety personnel, healthcare workers, and others seeking to advance their emergency medical careers. RCC also plans to build on its relationships with Randolph County EMS, Ash-Rand Rescue Squad, Piedmont Triad Ambulance & Rescue, and other regional agencies to support the training.
Labor market data included in RCC’s grant application identified 66 annual openings for EMTs and paramedics across a six-county region, underscoring the need for qualified emergency medical professionals.
RCC’s award is part of a statewide allocation of nearly $3.9 million supporting 13 new workforce programs at 15 North Carolina community colleges. The College will provide a required $25,000 non-State match.
The initiative supports RCC 2.0, the College’s commitment to relevant, career-centered education that meets regional workforce needs.
