Randolph Community College has expanded its Mammography Certificate Program with the purchase of its first dedicated Hologic mammography simulation unit, a $224,000 investment that will provide registered radiologic technologists with enhanced hands-on training while helping meet the growing demand for mammographers across the region.

Students in Randolph Community College’s Mammography Certificate Program will have expanded opportunities to develop clinical skills and build confidence before entering healthcare settings thanks to the addition of the College’s first on-campus Hologic mammography simulation unit.

Purchased through grant funding, the approximately $224,000 mammography unit provides registered radiologic technologists enrolled in RCC’s program with hands-on experience in a simulated clinical environment. The equipment allows students to practice patient positioning, equipment operation, and imaging techniques while strengthening the technical skills they will use in clinical settings and throughout their careers. The addition reflects RCC’s ongoing commitment to preparing highly skilled healthcare professionals through innovative, industry-relevant instruction.

“Training on RCC's new mammography equipment gave me valuable hands-on experience before starting my clinical rotations,” said Kaytlin Bledsoe, a student in the Mammography Certificate Program. “It helped me build confidence, strengthen my technical skills, and feel well prepared for the transition to caring for patients in a real clinical setting.”

“Preparing students for success means providing access to the same technology and learning experiences they will encounter in today's healthcare environments,” President/CEO Dr. Shah Ardalan said. “This investment strengthens our Mammography Certificate Program while helping address the growing need for highly trained imaging professionals throughout our region.”

RCC's program is designed for registered radiologic technologists who want to expand their knowledge and advance their careers in breast imaging. The flexible program combines classroom instruction with supervised clinical experience, preparing students for post-primary certification in mammography. The curriculum aligns with current American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) content specifications and equips graduates with the specialized knowledge and clinical competencies needed to succeed in today’s evolving medical imaging field.

The new simulation unit enhances students’ educational experience by providing additional opportunities to practice and refine their skills before working with patients in clinical settings. It also supports the College’s efforts to help meet the growing demand for qualified mammographers across the region.

Clinical partnerships remain an essential component of the program’s success. RCC’s affiliated healthcare partners provide students with valuable real-world learning experiences under the guidance of experienced technologists who serve as mentors and clinical instructors. Their continued support helps prepare the next generation of advanced imaging professionals while strengthening the regional healthcare workforce.
