RCC’s Archdale Welding Center is a participating organization in SENSE (Schools Excelling through National Skills Education) with the AWS. SENSE is a set of specifications and guidelines meant to assist schools in training welders and ensures all graduates have the knowledge and skills to meet the work force once in the field.

Trainees that complete a SENSE-compliant training program are eligible to receive an AWS SENSE certificate and wallet card. The SENSE program includes four different certificates that a trainee can earn, one for each welding process offered (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, and FCAW).

Upon successful completion of the Welding Technology program, the student should be able to

  • Properly perform welds to industry standards.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify common weld defects.
  • Show proficiency in setting up of welding machines.

The Welding Technology curriculum provides students with a sound understanding of the science, technology, and applications essential for successful employment in the welding and metalworking industry. To effectively train Welding Technology professionals, the performance of certain functions is incorporated throughout the program. Faculty and students are required to demonstrate proficiency of these functions in the Welding Technology program. The essential functions include:

  1. Critical Thinking: critical thinking sufficient enough to use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. For example, preparing weld tests coupons with proper joint geometry.
  2. Interpersonal Skills: interpersonal abilities sufficient to interact with co-workers under physically and mentally demanding environmental conditions. For example, working with other students and faculty.
  3. Communication Skills: communication skills sufficient to communicate in class and shop using welding terms and safety practices pertaining to welding. For example, being able to communicate procedures pertaining to welding.
  4. Physical skills: physical abilities sufficient to perform welding skills in a hot (90+degree) and cold environment, dexterity to perform welds in all positions (flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead) at floor level and heights over six feet, ability to use hand tools such as grinders, oxy-act torch and hammer.
  5. Weight-bearing: weight-bearing ability sufficient to lift and carry weight up to 50 pounds. For example, lifting steel plates.
  6. Visual : visual skills sufficient to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer) with or without corrective lenses. For example, being able to see a welding puddle.
  7. Listening: listening skills sufficient to give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. For example, listening to faculty and customers' assessment of problem.
  8. Monitoring: monitoring ability sufficient to monitor/assess performance of yourself, others, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action. For example, being able to recognize defects and being able to repair it.

EXAMPLES ARE NOT ALL INCLUSIVE.
Randolph Community College is an ADA compliant institution. The College does not discriminate on the basis of disability in the admissions process or in access to its programs, services and/or activities for qualified individuals who meet essential eligibility requirements.
