Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Description

Our ABE pathway is designed for adult learners who need to improve their reading, writing and math skills before transitioning into our GED®/HSE or AHS pathway. ABE is also available to students with a high school diploma that wish to increase or review needed skills.

ABE, GED®/HSE, ESoL Program Information

Students are required to attend an orientation and complete a TABE or CASAS assessment to determine academic skills and abilities to ensure proper placement in our programs. Orientations are offered during the day and evening. Regular attendance is vital for student success.

Minors (16 and 17 years old) can enroll in our programs. Call 336-633-0106 for more information for ABE, GED® or AHS pathways.

Once a student enters class, regular attendance is required. Signing a registration sheet or taking the placement test does not constitute full-time enrollment in Career and College Readiness.

Full-time enrollment is regular attendance for 20 hours a week. Enrollment requirements for external offices and agencies supersede Randolph Community College’s requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to be informed of these requirements.

Completion of the General Educational Development is by testing in five areas of academic studies:

  • language arts/writing,
  • language arts/reading,
  • math,
  • science, and
  • social studies.

Students must pass all five tests and attain an adequate composite score for the whole battery.

Completion of the Adult High School Diploma is by earning credits for a total of 22 courses. Each course consists of a series of tests and a final exam.

Usually, students complete courses by independent study.

Students must have completed, in previous high school or at RCC, 22 total units of courses to include:

  • four units of English,
  • three units of math (Algebra 1 required),
  • three units of social studies (Civics, U.S. History, and World Studies required),
  • three units of science (Biology and Physical Science required),
  • one unit of Health or P.E., and
  • six electives.

All students who receive the Adult High School Diploma must pass the North Carolina Competency Test as required by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Randolph Community College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate degree. Contact the Commission on Colleges at 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Ga. 30033-4097 or call 404-679-4500 for questions about the accreditation of Randolph Community College.

The Career and College Readiness area is governed by the North Carolina Community College System and its Board and by the Board of Trustees of Randolph Community College.

These programs are authorized by the General Assembly of the State of North Carolina (North Carolina Administrative Code, Title 23, Subchapter 2E).

Randolph Community College awards the Adult High School Diploma by affiliation agreements with Asheboro City Schools and Randolph County Schools. Both of these systems are governed by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and its Board and by the local boards of education. Both are accredited by the Commission on High Schools of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
