Graham Friends Church Senior Pastor Rev. Thomas Barton will be the guest speaker at Randolph Community College’s Veterans Day Ceremony, which is Thursday, Nov. 8, from 11 a.m.-noon in the JB and Claire Davis Corporate Training Center of the Continuing Education and Industrial Center (CEIC) on the Asheboro Campus. The public is invited to attend.
Barton, a Randolph County resident and Coleridge High School graduate, was stationed with the 48th Air Defense Command at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro and served at several locations during the Vietnam War, including Udorn Thani Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand which had the reputation for most aces in the war and most B-52 support missions and was headquarters for the secret CIA organization “Air America.” He completed his service at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi, and was honorably discharged with the rank of E-4 on June 17, 1968.
Once out of the service, Barton worked at IBM; Motion Industries, Inc., and Pumps, Parts & Service, Inc. He also taught as an adjunct instructor at RCC and became a pastor.
In 2012, Barton started volunteering with the Randolph County Honor Guard and served as Chaplain for the Guard. Four years later, he was nominated and elected to be Commander of the Randolph County Honor Guard from 2016-17. During Barton’s year as commander, the Honor Guard performed 638 funerals in 15 counties and provided support for 44 funeral homes.
The ceremony will include the presentation of colors by the Asheboro High School Air Force JROTC and an invocation and opening remarks by RCC President Dr. Robert Shackleford.
