Guitar Courses Scheduled at RCC Beginning in September

ASHEBORO (August 28, 2018)

Walter Matthew Hoover, a professional musician and teacher for the past 30 years, will teach a “Beginning Guitar” and a “Guitar 2” course at Randolph Community College, both beginning in September.

HooverIn “Beginning Guitar” (#67088), students will learn the basics of guitar technique that make a strong musical foundation. Topics covered include use of a pick or plectrum, note reading, fretting notes, and playing open position chords. Easy examples of famous songs will be used throughout to make learning fun and inspiring. The course will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Mondays, Sept. 10 through Nov. 12.

“Guitar 2” (#67089) is designed for students who have completed Beginning Guitar and are wanting to build upon the skills they have attained, or for those guitarists who have a little experience already. Topics will include rounding out the 15 basic chords, note reading on strings five and six, eighth notes and eighth note strumming, and more of the fundamentals of technique. This class will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Sept. 26 through Dec. 5.

The cost for each course is $150, and both classes will be held on the Asheboro Campus. The required textbook, “Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1, 2nd edition,” can be used for both classes.

Hoover holds a BFA in classical guitar performance from Marshall University and a MM degree in classical guitar performance from Appalachian State University. A gifted composer and arranger, Hoover’s original works have been performed around the Eastern U.S. by a variety of soloists and ensembles, and he has recorded and released four CDs of his own music as well. He is also well versed in contemporary styles of music, excelling at the electric guitar and ukulele.
