Educational Specialist (Math/English/Reading) Student Support Services – In-Take (TRIO)

Hiring Range: $30,444 - $35,011

The Educational Specialist reports directly to the Director of Student Support Services. The Educational Specialist facilitates adult learners’ progress toward completion of developmental studies and other courses, obtaining associates degrees and transferring to four-year institutions by assessing students’ needs for academic skills development and by providing resources to meet those needs. The specialist identifies and supports students with special needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:

  • Masters Degree in academic subject area or in higher education or bachelor’s degree with significant experience in TRIO Programs, especially Student Support Services.
  • An understanding of and experience with TRIO Programs and federal grants.
  • Competency in computer use and various software programs including Excel.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organization skills.
  • A valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equal opportunity, and the academic, intellectual, and social development of all students.

Preferred

  • Spanish and English language fluency.
  • Experience in developmental or remedial education at the college level.
  • Experience teaching in the community college environment.
  • Experience with devising matriculation agreements and monitoring college-transfer programs.
  • An understanding of and work experience in the community college system.

Duties & Responsibilities:

DUTIES:

  • Serve as initial point of contact for assessing the qualifications of students to participate in the SSS program.
  • Conduct student in-take, including in-take interviews and needs assessments.
  • Help to manage the system of electronic and hard copy files documenting student in-take, services rendered to students, and student outcomes.
  • Organize and coordinate the SSS college transfer program, including, identifying and recruiting students who are potential candidates for transfer to four-year institutions.
  • Work closely with college faculty and staff to provide sound academic advising to SSS participants.
  • Identify and recruit students who are potential candidates for transfer to four-year institutions.
  • Work with the Career & Retention Specialist/Counselor to organize and coordinate the SSS college transfer program.
  • Coordinate and conduct scholarship searches, academic and personal growth workshops to promote student retention and success.
  • Provide advising services to SSS participants in developmental classes.
  • Advise the director of students’ needs and assist in the development of services to meet those needs.
  • Attend in-house and external TRIO training workshops.
  • Treat others respectfully, speak to others courteously, and behave in such a way that creates a workplace environment that is marked by trustworthiness, honest but polite. communication, and interpersonal interactions that are both personally cordial and professionally appropriate.
  • Act as a team player when working with any and all employees of the College.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Support Services.
