President’s 50th Anniversary Welcome
Dr. Robert S. Shackleford Jr.

What a difference fifty years makes! From a dream held by local leaders who built Randolph Industrial Education Center in 1962 to provide high quality educational opportunities for the people of Randolph County, to the outstanding comprehensive community college that is known today as Randolph Community College, it has been an incredible half-a-century!

This year, from January through December 2012, we will celebrate our 50th anniversary with exciting events, activities, and speakers that honor the highlights of the first fifty years of Randolph Community College.

After a year of planning under the guidance of the school’s first director, Al G. Farkas, and another year of planning and building our first building - a 33,000 square-foot L-shaped building - under the leadership of the school’s new director, Robert E. Carey, Randolph Industrial Education Center opened its doors for classes on September 4, 1962 with 75 full-time students, eight faculty members, and four staff members.

The dream was launched by the foresight, planning, and hard work of a group of community leaders who envisioned what a difference it would make in this community to have a center of higher education in Randolph County. From that small beginning, the College has grown tremendously and now enrolls more than 14,000 students each year. The College offers lifelong learning opportunities in such programs as college/university transfer; medical; art and design; business; computer, education; law enforcement and other public services; vocational and technical; continuing education; basic skills; entrepreneurship; business and industry workforce training programs; the nationally renowned, world-class Photographic Technology program; and the award-winning Randolph Early College High School, one of the leading high schools in the state of North Carolina, located on the campus of Randolph Community College.

The facilities have grown from one building to an impressive and vibrant Asheboro Campus, a thriving Archdale Center, and our Emergency Services Training Center that is one of the finest facilities of its kind to be found anywhere. The growth of our facilities to meet student and program needs has been remarkable and the vision for RCC’s potential growth has only begun.

From our humble beginnings, Randolph Community College has emerged into one of the highest performing colleges academically in the state, consistently graduating students who perform impressively in the workplace, excel at the four-year colleges and universities to which they transfer, and pass their board exams for their chosen careers. Because of the dedication of our extraordinary and gifted faculty and staff, the quality of our educational programs, and the radical hospitality with which we serve our students and community, people are making their way to Randolph Community College, where we create opportunities and change lives.

This year, we celebrate 50 years of growth – changing lives and enriching our community, a heritage that is truly worth celebrating!

We also take this milestone in our history to re-commit ourselves to the next 50 years of continued progress and service to Randolph County. Many thanks to all who have been a part of this incredible half-a-century of Randolph Community College’s proud heritage!

And fasten your seatbelts…the best is yet to be!!
