Winners Announced in Randolph Community
College Foundation 2004 Juried Photo Competition
ASHEBORO, N.C.--Seven photographs taken by five area photographers
were chosen as the finalists in the Randolph Community College Foundation's
first Juried Photo Competition. The judging took place May 3, but the
placement of the winners won't be revealed until the Photo Auction &
Gala Reception planned for 6 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, at Pinewood
Country Club.
"It's a very dynamic photo." "Nice, clean simple image."
"Strong portrait." "Conveys a sense of fun." These
were just some of the comments of the jurors during the judging, which
brought together a former Randolph Community College professor and two
of his former students.
Jurors were Robert Heist Jr., retired departmental chair and instructor
for Randolph Community College's Photographic Technology department; Juan
Villa, owner and operator of Villa Photography Inc. in Asheboro and an
RCC graduate; and Jerry Wolford, an award-winning photographer for the
News & Record (Greensboro) and also an RCC graduate.
The judges chose a first and second place winner in three categories
and a best of show winner. A blind process was utilized so the judges
didn't know the identity of the photographers.
The finalists (in alphabetical order) and their photos are Eddie Hough
of Asheboro - "Pisgah Covered Bridge, Snow of 2000"; Judith
Brown of Seagrove - "Country Sawmill"; Kathryn Reynolds of Charlotte
- "Traveling School Bus" and "Walter Moose"; Terry
Spencer of High Point - "The Turnip Patch" and "Old Friends";
and Greg Stewart of Asheboro - "Lone Boater."
The winning photographs will be on display in the library at Randolph
Community College from June 1 - 9 during regular library hours (M-Th,
8 a.m.-10 p.m.; and F, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.). The library is located in the Learning
Resources Center on the Asheboro Campus.
Funds raised from the competition and Photo Auction & Gala Reception
will go toward funding a Success Center at Randolph Community College.
The Success Center will be a place that will help individuals develop
educational, career, and personal goals, and get connected to resources
and support. A secondary goal of the competition is to create a library
of photographic images of Randolph County for public display at the College.
The reception on June 10 will offer live entertainment, delicious food
and beverages, fun, and fellowship. Cost is $30 per person and seating
is limited. Dress is business casual. The photo competition prizes will
be awarded at 6:30 p.m.; the auction will begin at 7 p.m. Many of the
photographers and judges will be on hand to give their perspectives on
the prints.
