May 21, 2004

ASHEBORO, N.C.--Two Randolph Community College students were among community college students from across the state honored at the seventh annual Academic Excellence Awards luncheon in Raleigh on May 7. The goal of the Academic Excellence Award is to celebrate student achievement and recognize some of the most talented students attending North Carolina's community colleges.

The NCCCS hosts this celebration honoring 116 students, two from each of the 58 community colleges. The students were selected for their academic success and demonstration of leadership ability. These are students who excel in the classroom and are also dedicated to making a difference on their campuses and in their communities.

Mary C. Hunt, an RCC Early Childhood Associate student, and Denise A. Macfayden, an Associate Degree Nursing student at RCC, were selected based on their academic achievement and demonstration of leadership ability.

A Seagrove native, Hunt graduated from Southwestern Randolph High School and graduated from RCC on May 8. At RCC, she served as president of the Student Educators of Young Children and was named to the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. She and her husband, Steve, have one son. Hunt is the daughter of John "Buck" and Minnie Carter of Seagrove.

Macfayden is originally from Randleman and graduated from Asheboro High School. In addition to being an ADN graduate, Macfayden has earned her EMT-paramedic diploma from RCC. She plans to continue her education and earn her bachelor's and master's degrees. She served as president of the ADN class of 2004, a member of the National Student Nurses Association, and Phi Theta Kappa honor society. She was named to the National Dean's List in 2002 and 2003, Who's Who Among National College Students in 2003, and won the U.S. Achievement Academy All-American Collegiate Scholar Award in 2003. Macfayden lives in Asheboro with her husband, Robert. They have two sons and two granddaughters. She is the daughter of Jerry and Beatrice Masingale of Randleman.
