RCC Industrial Systems and Electrical/Electronics Programs Add More Options For Students

ASHEBORO, N.C.--The demand for more highly skilled workers and convenience for students are the reasons behind changes made to the Industrial Systems Technology and Electrical/Electronics Technology curricula at Randolph Community College for this fall, said Randy Gunter, program head and instructor.

An associate degree offering both day and evening classes was added to the Industrial Systems Technology program, which combines courses in electrical/electronics, machining, welding, hydraulics/pneumatics, HVAC, industrial safety, and industrial maintenance to produce skilled technicians able to service, maintain, repair or install equipment in industrial settings. Gunter said most jobs in this area now require a two-year degree, especially those with larger companies; and while existing workers are sometimes grandfathered in under new education requirements, new hires must have a degree in order to compete for jobs. This program also offers diploma and certificate levels.

In Electrical/Electronics Technology, evening classes were added for the associate degree, which was previously offered in the daytime only. "We are trying to make it more flexible for people who work first and third shift," said Gunter, who noted that with the addition, students now will be able to work a full-time job during the day and still get their degree. And for those people who are just looking to acquire specific skills, the program is offering four different certificate options: Electrical/Electronics Certificate, Programmable Logic Controllers Certificate, Electrical Wiring Certificate, and Basic Wiring/PLC Certificate. Diploma and certificate options in this program—which provides training for persons interested in the installation and maintenance of electrical/electronics systems found in residential, commerical, and industrial facilities—also offer both day and evening classes.

Despite the flagging economy, the job market is still strong for these professions, said Gunter, with pay ranging from $10 to $17 per hour or higher for experienced workers.

For more information on these programs, visit RCC's web site at www.randolph.edu or call the Information Center at (336) 633-0200. Registration for fall classes at RCC is Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 13 and 14. Persons interested in signing up for fall classes should call as soon as possible to begin the application process. No late registration will be held this year.
