RCC Carpentry Class To Build One-Room Schoolhouse For Homebuilders Assn.
ASHEBORO, N.C.--Students in Randolph Community College's "Carpentry:
Playhouse" class this fall will have the chance to work on a slice
of history--a one-room school house. The project is a collaborative effort
between RCC and the Asheboro/Randolph Home Builders' Association. An associate
of the Home Builders' Association will teach each segment of the class,
which will be held on the Asheboro Campus.
Bob Armfield, lead instructor, said the designer of this year's playhouse
is Travis Mitchell of Eastern Randolph High School. Mitchell was the winner
of a drafting contest sponsored by the Home Builders' Association. This
is the third year that RCC has been involved in building the playhouse,
which has been a fund-raising project for the Home Builders' Association
for around 30 years. The first year, RCC students built a soda shop playhouse,
and last year, a houseboat was constructed. The Association will sell
tickets for chances to win the playhouse.
Students in this fundamentals of carpentry class will construct the
playhouse using the same building construction techniques required in
building a home. Instruction includes flooring, framing, roofing, interior
and exterior finish, electrical, plumbing, and finish work. Armfield said
the design is more traditional this year, utilizing tongue and groove
boards, window framing, and working with trusses.
Registration for the class (#0303530) is still open. No prior carpentry
experience is needed. It will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 - 9:30
p.m., Aug. 5 - Sept. 30. Cost is $60 plus $1.25 for accident insurance
and a $5 supply fee. Call today to preregister, (336) 633-0267 in Asheboro
or (336) 862-7980 in Archdale.
