Community College Leadership Program

ASHEBORO, N.C.--Randy Gunter, program head and instructor in Randolph Community College's Electrical/Electronics Technology and Industrial Systems Technology programs, has been chosen to participate in the North Carolina Community College Leadership Program. The program is designed to offer an opportunity for leadership training to faculty and staff from the 59 community colleges in the North Carolina system. Gunter began attending monthly seminars in November and will graduate in April. Gunter was chosen from a field of 65 applicants to be one of the 34 participants in this year's leadership class.

Partially funded by a grant from the North Carolina Department of Community Colleges, the program is beginning its 15th year. Participants represent a diverse group of persons who have or seek opportunities for leadership within their own colleges. Emphasis is placed on the recruitment of women and minorities. The program is sponsored by the North Carolina Chapter of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges, a national organization working for the concerns of all women who are employed in community and technical colleges.

The training includes an overview of personality as it relates to leadership styles, an in-depth look at each participant's style of leadership, and skill development in such areas as team building, conflict management, problem solving, goal setting, and career planning. Informational topics include "Local Governance and Budget Issues," "Understanding the Changing Community College System," "Leadership Diversity," and "Advancement Strategies."

Gunter began teaching at RCC in September 1998.
