GEAR UP Summer Enrichment
Program Concludes
ASHEBORO (June 2007) |
Around 40 North Asheboro Middle School students had the
opportunity to explore a variety of prospective careers during
the “Got
College?” summer enrichment program during the
last two weeks.
“We are very excited to provide this experience again this
year for our students,” said April Thompson,
GEAR UP Coordinator. “Twenty
students each week will spend time on the Randolph Community College
campus and travel to local businesses to see careers in action. Students
will have the opportunity to speak to professionals in a specific
related field to gain a better perspective on what the job entails,
level of education expected, work conditions and salary,” continued
Thompson.
Participants learned about the postsecondary education needed
to pursue careers in the areas of Human Services, Photography,
Advertising and Graphic Design, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering,Business
Technology and Health Occupations.
GEAR UP, Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness
for Undergraduate Programs, is a national initiative whose mission is to significantly
increase the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed
inpostsecondary education. Asheboro City Schools was awarded a GEAR
UP grant in January 2006 to provide summer enrichment, college counseling,
college visits, mentoring, career awareness and motivation activities
to encourage students to continue their education beyond high school.
“This unique college experience will expose students to postsecondary
education and help the student become more aware of the benefits
of a challenging academic schedule and career options. Ourpartnership
with RCC and local businesses makes this a win ‑ win for everyone...especially
our students,” concluded Thompson.
