ASHEBORO (May 2, 2007)
The Energizer Trust Fund has awarded a $25,000 grant to Randolph Community College to support the Career Readiness Certification (CRC) testing program, which documents standardized testing results in three skills areas identified as essential by most employers. The funds will provide "Energizer Scholarships" to individuals unable to pay the $30 testing fee for the Career Readiness Certification. The scholarships will be administered by the Randolph Community College Foundation.
North Carolina's Career Readiness Certification is designed to meet the needs of both employers and job seekers in a transitioning economy. For employers, the CRC offers a reliable means of determining whether a potential employee has the necessary literacy, math skills and problem-solving skills to be "job ready." For job seekers, the CRC serves as a portable credential that can be more meaningful to employers than a high school degree or a resume citing experience in different job settings. The CRC is based upon WorkKeys™, a nationally recognized, skills assessment tool developed by ACT Inc.
"Core work skills training is sorely needed by a large number of Randolph County's workforce," according to Michelle Cole, director of the Human Resources Development program at Randolph Community College. "During the past five years, Randolph County lost over 3,000 jobs from either plant closings or permanent layoffs. The majority of these closings were in the textiles and furniture industries, industries that did not require the same high level of skills demanded by today's manufacturing and service employers."
The Energizer grant will pay the fee for CRC tests for at least 800 individuals who otherwise could not afford it, said Susan Milner, senior director of resource development for RCC. "Energizer's assistance will not only help these individuals, but it also will help RCC and its workforce development partners develop and certify the skilled workforce we need to be competitive in today’s global economy."
The Career Readiness Certificate is transferable to other states, as it is a national initiative to strengthen the workforce in America. "A well-trained workforce is good for Randolph County and helps employers know we want them to conduct their business here," Cole concluded.
