RCC NEWSRCC Introduces Training Program for 9-1-1 Telecommunicators ASHEBORO (October 24, 2006) - Randolph Community College will introduce a Public Safety Communications Program in January to train 911 dispatchers. The program will total 432 hours of instruction and will provide continuing education credits to help the graduate find employment as a public safety communications specialist with a concentration in 9-1-1 operations. “Employment of dispatchers is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2012,” according to Ken Fields, director of emergency service programs and safety training for RCC. “Individuals with computer skills and experience will have a great opportunity for employment as public safety dispatchers.” The median annual earnings range for public safety telecommunicators is $29,000-$39,000. Coursework in this program will include instruction in communication skills (written and verbal), cultural diversity, stress management, emergency telecommunications equipment (hardware and software), and emergency operations (fire, EMS, law enforcement, emergency management). This program also includes student work activity at various public safety agencies. A portion of the program will be offered online as well as on the Asheboro Campus. Students who apply for admission to this program must have a high school diploma or GED and pass placement testing sufficient for entry into Math 070 and Reading & English 111 or higher and basic computer skills or the ability to document successful course completion.
