Yajaira Owens

“I am the first from my family to attend college. But RCC was small enough that you get that one on one attention. The teachers get to know you well.”

Yajaira Owens of Ramseur is a guidance counselor at Eastern Randolph High School. She graduated from Randolph Community College in 1997 with an associate in arts degree, then transferred to High Point University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. She completed her master's degree in counseling at A&T State University in 2006.

After growing up in Los Angeles, Yajaira moved to Asheboro with her family when she was a junior in high school. "I was kind of scared of applying to a big university, and my grades were not as good. I did not think I would be able to go to college," she says, but her Asheboro High School counselor advised her to start at Randolph Community College. She said RCC's classes were "very competitive," preparing her well for her transfer to HPU.

Yajaira is a co-sponsor of the AIM (Action, Inspiration, Motivation) Club at Eastern Randolph, which helps Latino students further their education through college scholarships. She is also a member of the New Union Methodist Church.

Yajaira is married. Her husband, Jonathan, also started his education at RCC and transferred to HPU.
