“My daughter encouraged me to come to school,” says Paula Marshall. “She thought it would bring us closer together and it has.”
“I have been a part of (Randolph Community College’s) SGA for two years now. It is a great way to meet new people,” says Ivy McSwain.
When Paula Marshall and Ivy McSwain walk through the halls at Randolph Community College together, they don’t look like the typical college classmates. Mother and daughter, the two started college together in August 2007 and have formed an even closer bond than they already had.
“My daughter encouraged me to come to school,” said Paula, a disabled mother of two from Asheboro. “She thought it would bring us closer together and it has.” Paula is studying Computer Information Technology and hopes to graduate in May 2010. She has become very involved in college life. She volunteers as part of the JobLink Mentor program and is a mentor for Student Support Services. She also was chosen to attend RCC’s first Student Leadership Academy last spring. “I have made a lot of friends and I love each and every one of them,” she said.
Ivy is enrolled in RCC’s College Transfer program is planning to transfer to North Carolina Central University and major in therapy/counseling. She has been active in RCC’s Student Government Association, helping to raise food and money for Christians United Outreach Center in town and for children with cancer. “I’ve enjoyed my time at RCC and look forward to the next couple of semesters,” she said.Paula P.M.
