"(RCC's) photography program taught about lighting and gave me a good background."

After high school, Gwen Freeman continued her education at Randolph Community College. She started with some basic classes, like principles and elements of design, so that she would have a design foundation. In 2003, she enrolled full-time in the Photographic Technology program with a concentration in Commercial Photography.

"Classes in both areas were great," said Gwen. "They prepared you for lots of things. The photography program taught about lighting and gave me a good background."

The Museum of Art in Raleigh was holding an open portfolio review, so Gwen decided to go. When she met with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, they reviewed her portfolio and immediately accepted her into the school. Gwen was able to transfer 63 credit hours from RCC to the Art Institute, entering as a junior. She started attending classes there seven days a week in fall 2007.

One day Gwen hopes to work at a commercial studio, maybe with a famous photographer. She aspires to have some of her work published as well.

Gwen makes her home in Asheboro with her mother, Susan Shaw.
