RCC Archdale Brings Back Landscaping, Jewelry Making Courses

ARCHDALE (March 1, 2012)

Randolph Community College’s Archdale Center is introducing two new continuing education courses in March that haven’t been offered at the College for several years, according to Lisa Bock, director.

“Residential Landscaping and Lawn Care” is a practical course that covers the basic principles of landscape design for either the homeowner or an entrepreneur looking to start a business. Activities will include drawing plans; calculating area, volume and plant quantities needed for landscape projects; and estimating costs. In addition, a demonstration will be given on proper planting, pruning, and propagation. This course will be taught by Steve Cline, owner of Cline’s Greenhouse, Nursing & Landscaping. Cline holds a master’s degree in agricultural education from North Carolina State University. This course will meet from 6:30-9:30 p.m., Tuesdays, March 20 through May 8. Cost is $65.

In the second course, “Beaded Jewelry Making,” students will learn the basics of making their own jewelry from instructor Johnnie Springett. Earrings, necklaces, and bracelets are put together by using various types of wires, threads, jump rings and beads. In this class, students will learn how to identify the various types of “findings” used to make the thousands of pieces of jewelry you see every day. Students will master the art of “wrapping” a wire to make various types of earrings, charms, and pendants. Students will work with ribbons, chains, and holistic beading as well. Students will need to purchase hand tools (apx. $12-18) and materials, which may range from $10 and up depending on the type of beads used. The registration fee for this course is $27. The class will meet from 6-8 p.m., Thursdays, March 22 through April 12.
