RCC Diesel Engine Repair Course Begins Jan. 17

ASHEBORO (December 16, 2011)

Randolph Community College will offer a Diesel Engine Repair course beginning in January designed to give students hands-on experience in rebuilding four-cycle diesel engines to manufacturers’ specifications.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, diesel mechanics held about 263,100 jobs in 2008. They are employed in almost every industry, particularly those that use trucks, buses, and equipment to haul, deliver, and transport materials, goods, and people. In addition, nearly every area of the country employs diesel mechanics, and job opportunities are expected to be good for people who complete formal training programs.

In RCC’s Diesel Engine Repair course, engines will be completely disassembled and checked for manufacturers specifications and reassembled. Emphasis will be placed on engines used in power equipment up to 510 horsepower and the proper use of special tools and test equipment. Alternative fuels combined with petroleum diesel will be introduced, including hybrids.

The class will meet from 6-10 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, Jan. 17 through May 9 on the Asheboro Campus. Tuition is $175, plus a $1.25 supply fee. Students with financial need should check with the Continuing Education office about scholarships or financial aid available.
