RCC Archdale Center Increases Number of Motorcycle Courses

ARCHDALE (July 11, 2011)

Motorcycle use is on the rise, whether for recreation or to provide a cost-effective commute to work, according to industry insiders. With increasing numbers of motorcycles on the road, there is an increased need for safety training for motorcycle riders. Randolph Community College's Archdale Center is meeting that need by doubling the number of Beginning Motorcycle Rider Safety classes it is offering.

The Motorcycle Industry Council Owner Survey estimated that 11 million motorcycles were in use in 2009, a 5 percent increase over the 2008 motorcycle population of 10.4 million. Motorcycle miles traveled also increased 5 percent from 2008 to 2009 with a total of 27.6 billion miles. In addition, a 2008 survey conducted by Nationwide Insurance found that with higher gas prices, 35 percent of motorcycle owners plan to ride their bikes more, turning their riding hobby into an everyday form of transportation.

Randolph Community College's Beginning Motorcycle Rider Safety course covers basic skills and beyond, teaching students how to correctly deal with situations that they hope never happen. In the classroom, students will be given information on how to ride properly. Outside, students will practice and develop skills by riding in a controlled environment.
Climax resident David Fields took both the basic rider course in 2004 and the experienced rider course in 2008 at RCC. During the summer of 2008, he rode his Triumph Tiger motorcycle from North Carolina to Alaska and back. "(RCC's) training served me well on my trip to Alaska, and I have logged over 57,000 miles without any real problems," he said. "I believe it was because of the fine training I received at RCC."

RCC's Archdale Center is now offering two Beginning Rider Safety courses each month. The courses are completed in one weekend, with classroom work on Friday evenings from 6-10 p.m. and riding skills taught on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. A motorcycle and helmet will be furnished. The Department of Motor Vehicles waives the driving skills exam for students who have successfully completed this course. The $140 fee includes all materials, workbook, use of bike, and accident insurance.

Upcoming classes scheduled include July 22-24, Aug. 12-14, Aug. 19-21, Sept. 9-11, Sept. 23-25, Oct. 7-9, Oct. 28-30, Nov. 4-6, Nov. 18-20, and Dec. 9-11. An experienced rider course is also available. For more information or to register for one of these courses, call the RCC Archdale Center at 336-862-7980.
