ASHEBORO (May 16, 2011)

Randolph Community College will offer an Interior Design Career Exploration course beginning May 24 at the Asheboro Campus.

The course is designed for prospective Interior Design students, realtors who stage homes, homeowners looking to update their interiors, or do-it-yourselfers. Students will learn about the profession of interior design and cover residential design basics, such as measuring a space, planning furniture placement, and creating a functional floor plan. Students will also study color theory, how to select fabrics, finishes, lighting and accessories, and learn how to develop and mix styles.

The course will be taught by Holly Barker, program head and instructor for RCC's two-year associate degree in Interior Design. Barker holds a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design and Home Furnishings Marketing from the Earl N. Phillips School of Business at High Point University, CIDA Accredited. Having taught Interior Design at RCC since 2003, Barker has a broad range of teaching experience in numerous subjects.

Barker is president and principle designer for House of Woodward, a design firm specializing in furniture and product development exclusively for high-end domestic and international furniture manufacturers. Barker has designed for some of the top leaders in the industry and for private labels. She is GREEN Leaders Certified through the Sustainable Furnishings Council. Barker has been a member of the Historical Preservation Commission for the city of High Point, Women in the Home Industry Today (WithIT), American Society of Furniture Designers (ASFD), and the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC).

The course will meet from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 24 through July 28. The registration cost is $120, but the course is free to those who are unemployed, have been notified of impending layoff, or meet eligibility requirements. For more information or to register, call 336-633-0268.
