When it comes to finding a good job, training is essential. But that training doesn't necessarily have to be in the form of a two-year or four-year degree. Just ask Zach Jackson of Farmer. When he found himself out of work for a short period of time last year, he decided to hone his skills in the Power Equipment Mechanics Program at Randolph Community College.

The class is a short-term Continuing Education course designed to provide students with hands-on knowledge of power equipment rebuilding techniques to manufacturer's quality specifications. Jackson had mostly on-the-job training before enrolling at RCC. "That was one reason I started taking classes at RCC," he said. "Basically, you can't go anywhere nowadays without schooling." Jackson said he learned a lot about small engines. And just a few months of training got him a job offer at James River Equipment Company of Asheboro, where he has been working as an agricultural technician for around three months. "RCC gave me the opportunity to get the job here."

Kathy Auman, service writer for James River, said the training really helped Jackson add to his skills. "He is very knowledgeable and he picks up things easily," she said. "I absolutely would recommend the Power Mechanics training at RCC to anyone interested in this field."

RCC's next Power Equipment Mechanics Program course begins May 16 at the Asheboro Campus. The class will meet on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, from 1-5 p.m., May 16 through Aug. 10. The registration fee is $175.

RCC is also offering a Lawn & Garden Tractor Restoration class from 6-10 p.m. on the same dates, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, May 16 through Aug. 10, at the Asheboro Campus. The registration fee is $175.
