RCC's Phi Beta Lambda Plans Road Rally for April 30

ASHEBORO (April 5, 2011)

A road rally being planned by Randolph Community College's Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) club this month will raise money for the club's conferences and the March of Dimes. The first PBL Motorway Madness Road Rally has been scheduled for Saturday, April 30, beginning at RCC's Asheboro Campus. Phi Beta Lambda is a national organization for students preparing to pursue business occupations.

Road rallies are a form of motorsport where cars leave a starting point individually and are directed to follow a complicated route to a finish point, where the competitors gather (or "rally") together again, according to Laura Davis, president of RCC's PBL club. "Our rally is a just-for-fun event that will make the community aware of our organization's charity affiliate, March of Dimes," said Davis. The rally will be a combination of two classic forms of rally conducted at legal speeds on public roads with normal traffic: T.S. (Time-Speed) and Q&A (Question and Answer).

The road rally will include five pit stops, which are designed to draw attention to area businesses. "Our road rally is not a race, but an adventure that will lead participants throughout the main areas of Asheboro," said Erin Palmer, Business Administration instructor and advisor for PBL. "Through this event, we will make others aware of our school, our community, and a great cause."

Participants must be 18 years of age. There must be two, but not more than four people per car. There can be one to three cars per team. The entry fee is $25 for advance entries or $30 the day of the event.

Competitors will earn tickets for a gift basket drawing, plus a plaque for the winning car/team and certificates for participants. Gift baskets, for which raffle tickets will be available for purchase, include themed baskets for gardening, massage, RCC Cosmetology, automotive, home cooking, dinner and a movie, and Cox's Harley Davidson.

At the rally's finish line on RCC's Asheboro Campus, food will be provided by Henry James Bar-B-Que for $5 a plate from 3-6 p.m. The meal will include two hot dogs, hush puppies, baked beans, and tea.

Local businesses are welcome to come to RCC to set up a booth from 2-6 p.m. to advertise their businesses. For more information about setting up a booth, contact Erin Palmer at 336-633-0291.

On April 30, rally check-in begins at 8:30 a.m., cars line up at 9 a.m., a driver's meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m., and the rally begins at 10 a.m. A registration form and more information is available online at www.randolph.edu/motorwaymadness.php.
