Twenty-one Students Chosen for RCC Student Leadership Academy
ASHEBORO (November 8, 2010)
Students in Randolph Community College's 2010-2011 Student Leadership Academy learned about their leadership styles in the first session of the Academy held on Oct. 26 by taking the Jung Typology Test, an online personality assessment. Susie Scott and Dean Beck, RCC counselors, then talked to the students about how their personality types affected leadership roles.
Twenty-one students have been chosen for Randolph Community College's fourth annual Student Leadership Academy based on a competitive process that considered leadership experience, leadership potential, and a letter of reference from a faculty member. The group includes 12 traditional RCC students and 9 Randolph Early College High School students.
During the first session held on Oct. 26, participants had the chance to identify their own leadership styles through the Jung Typology Test, a personality assessment, and hear about resume writing. In upcoming sessions, the students will learn about leadership, communication, and ethics from a variety of speakers. Students will create a personal portfolio, which will be reviewed by Human Resource professionals, and will participate in a Student Leadership Project.
"I hope that the Student Leadership Academy will prepare me for my future career not only as a nurse, but in increasingly responsible positions as a leader," said RCC Associate Degree Nursing student Holly McArthur in her Leadership Academy application. "I hope it will help me gain insight on how to help myself and others deal with high pressure situations, how to handle the changes that happen daily in any industry, and how to help others find the leaders in themselves."
Rico Rivera, an Associate in Arts student chosen to attend the Academy, said, "I want to learn to get the group motivated and working by communicating, resolving conflict, learning to identify strengths, and delegating tasks accordingly. ... The skills I'll learn in the Student Leadership Academy will help me become a better leader in the community as a whole and partake in Randolph County's rich tradition of strong leadership."
The students will attend sessions in November, January, and February, and they will participate in a graduation ceremony in March, at which they will present the outcome of their leadership projects.
Sponsors of this year's Student Leadership Academy are Dr. Stuart B. Fountain and Dr. Alan S. Luria.
