Nineteen Students Chosen for RCC Student Leadership Academy

ASHEBORO (April 2, 2009)

Nineteen students have been chosen for Randolph Community College's second annual Student Leadership Academy that will take place Saturday, April 18 in the Foundation Conference Center on the Asheboro Campus.

"As a soon-to-be nurse, in a short amount of time I am going to be thrust into a profession where wise leadership is paramount," said RCC nursing student Sarah Golden in her Leadership Academy application. "I desire to take every possible opportunity to learn about how to carry this role out more effectively, knowing that it will impact patients and my community."

Daniel Jordan, a College Transfer student chosen to attend the Academy, said, "I hope to find insight in establishing a vision and leading others toward it.... I hope to gain the professionalism to stand out from other leaders and learn to inspire those under me to do the same."

The agenda for the day includes a keynote/luncheon address by Dr. Scott Ralls, president of the North Carolina Community College System; a discussion about "What is Leadership" by Dr. Robert Shackleford, president of Randolph Community College; and a session on decision making by Keith Crisco, secretary of the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

The student leaders will also hear from Susan Scott, Student Services counselor, and Dean Beck, career and retention specialist for RCC, on personality types and leadership styles; and Michelle Cole, dean of Basic Skills, on time management and workplace skills. In addition, Major Fred Rutledge, Randolph County Sheriff's Department, will speak on leadership in difficult situations.

Prior to the morning session, the students will get feedback on their portfolios from a team of human resources professionals including Dan McGugin, The Timken Company; RuthAnn Scott, Express Employment Professionals; Candice Garrett, BB&T, and Caitlin Thompson, RCC.

In the afternoon, the students will hear a presentation about leadership opportunities on campus and in the community by Ross Holt, assistant director of the Randolph County Library; Amy Byrd, director of the Volunteer Center; and Lori Shoenfeld, RCC student activities coordinator.

Students' families have been invited to join the group for closing remarks by Dr. Shackleford and a presentation of certificates, after which a reception will be held in the FCC.

Sponsors of the Leadership Academy include Dr. Alan S. Luria and several RCC staff members.
