Randolph Community College’s graduation ceremonies looked a little different this year. In a move to avoid the hot sun and/or stormy weather of past ceremonies at Asheboro High School football stadium, RCC separated its Curriculum and Adult High School/GED ceremonies and moved them indoors to the Asheboro High School Performing Arts Center.
The Curriculum ceremony took place at 7 p.m., Friday, May 9, with approximately 144 students participating in the ceremony out of 248 associate degree candidates, 30 diploma candidates, and 65 certificate candidates this year. The Adult High School/GED ceremony was held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 10. Forty-seven students participated out of 26 Adult High School Diploma and 259 General Education Development graduates this year.
Dr. Saundra Wall Williams, vice president for the administration division of the North Carolina Community College System, filled in for new System President Dr. Scott Ralls who had to cancel because of a death in his family, by giving the graduation address for Friday night’s ceremony. But her words were greeted with enthusiasm from the graduates, when she told the group she would keep her remarks short because she knew they wanted their degrees in their hands and time to celebrate with their families. She urged the graduates to become lifelong learners, telling a story about an occasion when she was 12 and taught her father fractions to help him get a job on the railroad. “Lifelong learning must become as natural to you as breathing,” she said. “When you get your diploma in your hand, you are actually being handed a door of opportunity for the rest of your life. Never, ever shut that door.”
Other speakers for Friday evening included Dr. Robert Shackleford, RCC president; Jerry L. Simpson, vice president for student services; and Charles E. Skeen, Student Government Association president. The conferring of the degrees, diplomas and certificates was handled by James M. Campbell Jr., chairman of the RCC Board of Trustees; Dr. Phyllis E. Helms, vice president for instructional services; and Christine G. Myers, dean of curriculum programs. Faculty marshals for the 2008 ceremony were W. Clark Adams, Gregory T. Stewart, and Susan S. Teague.
Dr. Randy Whitfield, associate vice president for academic and student services, Basic Skills Department, NCCCS, gave the graduation address for the Adult High School/GED ceremony Saturday morning. She started her remarks by urging the students to continue their educations: “It might help to know that people with college degrees earn about $14,000 more a year than people with just high school degrees.” She also told the graduates to take risks and not worry about failures, telling a story of a man who had numerous failures in his life and went on to become President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln.
Fellow graduate Devon Jarrell took a risk by giving opening remarks, admitting that it was frightening standing on the podium in front of so many people, “but if I can encourage one person to continue their education, then it was worth it.” Jarrell said she quit school when she was in the eighth grade and went to work in a hosiery mill. After the hosiery industry declined and she lost her job, she found out how hard it was to get another without a high school diploma and even when she got another job, realized she needed more education to compete in the workplace. She plans to continue her studies by taking Medical Office Assistant classes.
Special music by vocalist Lyn Koonce was featured during the ceremony. Janett C. Boles, coordinator for adult basic education, assisted James Campbell and Phyllis Helms in the conferring of the diplomas. Faculty marshals were Jerry Barnes, Dé Corbett, and Judy Cox.
RCC Student Ambassadors William G. Allen, Brenda L. Lopez, Jennifer D. Priddy, and Kristopher Tarot served as graduation marshals at both ceremonies and receptions for graduates and their guests were held at the Foundation Conference Center on the Asheboro Campus.
