Gilliland, Melissa Frazier, Regina Brewer, and Rhonda Winters.
Randolph Community College’s first tractor training course targeted for the adult female farmer, Amy’s Tractor & Equipment Training Institute for Women, concluded on Oct. 27. Taught by Lonnie Hamm, business development specialist at RCC’s Small Business Center and a Chatham County beef cattle farmer, the Continuing Education class features the basics of farm equipment operation, maintenance and safety.
“We were taught that safety is the most important aspect of using a tractor,” said student Regina Brewer. “You have to be aware of the dangers that come along with using a tractor. The class was fun and lots of hands on. Lonnie was very patient which made you feel more at ease.”
Rhonda Winters, another student, said, “This course was awesome. I am certain that any woman would feel comfortable operating a tractor after completing this course, and especially after the field day dedicated to actual hands-on driving and operating of different tractors. I would highly recommend this course to any woman who has the slightest case of farming fever.”
If you are interested in taking this class, it meets for nine hours over two weeks (Tuesdays, 6-8:30 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.) and will be repeated this spring, April 15 - 26. The cost is $30 plus $1.30 for insurance. Call Continuing Education at RCC at 336-633-0216 to register or for more information.
