Randolph Community College Foundation Announces Photo Competition Winners

ASHEBORO (May 23, 2007)

The competition was heated for the Randolph Community College Foundation Photography Competition with a record number of photographers entering and a record number of entries for the fourth year of the contest.

The judges for this year's competition were August Leger Meyland III, retired photo assignment editor with the News & Record in Greensboro and an RCC graduate; Jerry L. Wolford, staff photographer with the News & Record and an RCC graduate; and Cathy D. Hefferin, director of communications and marketing at RCC. A total of 132 photographs were entered in the contest from 40 photographers.

The finalists (in alphabetical order) and their photos are Amber Gerberich of Raleigh - “Mendoza Ranch”; Vincent Roger Gulickson of Asheboro - “Cows at Daybreak”; Tim Rinka of Asheboro - “Airlie Road”; Ashley A. Ross of Greensboro - “Taos Pueblo, NM (2003)”; Dan Routh of Franklinville - “Dragoon” and “Mount Rogers Summit”; Tristan Routh of Franklinville - “Omaha Beach”; Diane Villa of Asheboro - “A Graphic Design”; and Juan Villa of Asheboro - “Stairwell.”

The placement of first, second, and Best in Show winners will be revealed at the Photo Auction & Gala Reception to be held from 6 - 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12 at Pinewood Country Club. The winning photographs will be custom matted and framed and available for purchase during the auction, which begins at 6:45 p.m. The evening will begin with food and entertainment at 6 p.m. Many of the photographers and judges will be available at the Gala to offer insight into what makes each particular piece a winner. Last year's gala drew nearly 100 people from across Randolph County. In addition to the live auction of the winning photos, honorable mentions will be auctioned by a silent auction held throughout the evening.

"We are very excited about this year's contest and the wonderful photographs we will auction," said Joyce Wolford, executive director of the RCC Foundation. "The judges had a very difficult task choosing just nine winners. This is an excellent opportunity for people in our community to take home a beautiful piece of art while helping to provide education and training to Randolph County's workforce." All proceeds from the event benefit Randolph Community College and its students through the RCC Foundation.

The RCC Foundation Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation chartered to provide support to Randolph Community College. It is overseen by a volunteer board of directors made up of community leaders from throughout Randolph County. The Foundation raises money for scholarships and program support; provides College Innovation Fund mini-grants to staff, faculty and student teams; hosts an annual employee appreciation/recognition event; and funds high school achievement scholarships and the RCC Foundation Ambassador program.
