RCC Instructor Participates in Minority Nurse Educator Program

ASHEBORO (January 29, 2007)

Evelyn L. Hoover

Evelyn Hoover

Associate Degree Nursing instructor at Randolph Community College since 2003, has been chosen to participate in the Thomas Edison State College School of Nursing Minority Nurse Educator Grant Program. The intent of the program is to train nurse educators in online education and have them take this knowledge back to their home institutions to start or refine online programs in nursing.

Hoover began the 32-week Certificate in Distance Education Program offered by Thomas Edison State College of Trenton, N.J., on Jan. 8. The program consists of four eight-week online seminars. Upon completion of the seminars, Hoover will participate in a mentored online teaching experience in one of the School of Nursing’s undergraduate online courses for a 12-week period.

It is expected that participants will use the education provided them to teach online either at their home institution, or in an adjunct capacity at other institutions, thus “sharing” the scarce resource of diversified nursing faculty.

Hoover earned her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in nursing from the University of Maryland at Baltimore. She is a Ph.D. candidate in rural health nursing at Binghamton University in Binghamton, N.Y. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Nurses Honor Society, the American Public Health Association, and the Rural Nurses Organization. Before coming to RCC, she taught at Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland.

Graduates of Randolph Community College’s Associate Degree Nursing program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination, which is required for practice as a registered nurse. The program is approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
