RCC Design Student Wins Honorable Mention at Design Days
ASHEBORO (October 27, 2006) - Angela Perkins, a second-year Interior Design student from Greensboro, won an honorable mention for her retail space design project at Design Days in Charlotte recently. She competed with senior students from Winthrop University, Charlotte Art Institute, Appalachian State University and High Point University.
Thirteen students from Randolph Community College’s Commercial I design class attended, with four students entering the design competition. RCC was the only community college represented at the event, which was sponsored by the Carolinas Chapter of the International Interior Design Association. “Our students were able to visit several world class interior design and architectural firms, plus a couple of distributors,” said Sherrill Sykes, RCC Interior Design instructor. “They were able to see first-hand what a commercial interior designer does and were able to mix with students from four-year schools.” The students also benefited from the opportunity to learn about sustainable design and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, which is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
Perkins’ design encompassed part of the retail space in a hotel project. Her ideas for the Destination Refresh Signature Spa included areas for massage and facials and utilized a neutral color palette, luxurious fabrics and furnishings. She drew a floor plan using CAD and showcased her design on two display boards.
A graduate of Southwest Guilford High School, Perkins earned a degree in business management from North Carolina State University before enrolling in the Interior Design program at RCC. She would like to work in commercial design after graduation. She is the daughter of Kenneth and Glenna Perkins of Greensboro.
