RCC Student Clinches Speaking Contest Win; Earns Opportunity To Compete Overseas (3/4/06)

Despite weeks of rigorous preparation, the last thing Brian Brown expected was that he would take first place in the English Speaking Union Contest held in Pinehurst on March 4. But that’s exactly what happened. And the accomplishment has landed the Randolph Community College student an opportunity to represent Randolph Community College and the United States in the International Competition to be held in London, England on May 16-20, 2006.

Brown and another RCC student, Sarah Nutt, are both in the College Transfer program at Randolph Community College. With assistance and coaching provided by RCC English/Communication instructor, Mr. Clark Adams, the two students represented RCC in a most dignified manner at the sixth annual English Speaking Union Contest held at the Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities in Southern Pines.

The theme of this year’s contest was “Mapping the Global Future.” Brown’s speech, entitled “Conceptualizing the Creation of a Masterpiece,” dealt with the influence of art and its abilities to shape the future of our world. Nutt’s speech, “Education: The Cartography of the Future,” explained the role that education plays on influencing and impacting the global future.

This is the third year that RCC has participated in this contest and Adams was extremely pleased with the hard work and dedication that both of these students exhibited as they represented RCC and the community. RCC took second place in the Contest in 2004 and 2005.

Randolph Community College’s vision is to be the College of First Choice for residents of Randolph County. The College serves more than 12,000 students annually through more than 40 credit and noncredit programs, a broad range of continuing education and special interest classes, customized corporate training, and small business counseling.
