Placement Testing
Placement testing determines if students may benefit from Developmental
Studies courses in English, math, and/or reading. It is not an admissions
test. Placement testing examines a students current skills in English
and math, which helps you and your advisor plan your class selection.
RCC provides COMPASS and ASSET tests.
Following are some frequently asked questions regarding placement testing.
Do I need to test?
Applications must take a placement test to meet the prerequisites for
English and/or math courses unless they present documentation for exemption.
How can I be exempt from testing?
Applicants who have earned college credit for entry-level English and/or
math courses may be exempt. An evaluation of your official transfer credit
will determine this exemption.
Applicants with SAT scores of 480 or above for verbal are
exempt from the writing and reading skills test; 480 or above in math
are exempt from the numerical and elementary algebra tests; and 520 in
math provides an exemption for numerical, elementary algebra,
and intermediate algebra tests.
Applicants with ACT scores of 21 or above for verbal are exempt
from the writing and reading skills test; 21 or above in math
are exempt from the numerical and elementary algebra tests; and 23 in
math provides an exemption for numerical, elementary algebra,
and intermediate algebra tests.
Which test will I take?
You may choose either multiple choice test. COMPASS is a computerized,
untimed test, and ASSET is a paper/pencil, timed test.
How do I schedule testing?
Students in the surrounding area should call (336) 633-0224 or stop by
Student Services to schedule an appointment. Students who do not live
in close proxemity to RCC may take placement testing elsewhere. If either
the ACT or SAT test is not given at a local college, contact ACT at www.act.org
or SAT at www.collegeboard.com
for test site locations. After testing, have official scores sent to RCC.
Am I allowed to retake a placement test?
Students may retest once, and must wait at least two weeks from the original
test date before retesting. Students may not retest in a subject area
after enrolling in that corresponding Developmental Studies course.
To receive an admissions packet with an application or if you have
questions,
E-mail RCCs Information Center
or call (336) 633-0224.
