RCC's Emergency Medical Training

RCC offers Emergency Medical Training to the public and to professional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel.

 

EMS Programs and Courses

Medical Responder
This course is designed to prepare those who may be the first to arrive at the scene of an emergency to render appropriate care to the sick or injured. Medical emergencies, CPR, and traumatic injuries will be addressed as well as the legal issues involved in providing care to others.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-Basic)
This course is designed to educate students to recognize a variety of medical emergencies and provide efficient and prompt emergency care. Emphasis is placed on evaluating diagnostic signs and determining the extent of injury or illness through classroom and clinical training. Pre-requisite: High school diploma/GED, or satisfactory reading test score.
Paramedic
This course, conducted over four semesters, is designed to educate students who have completed an EMT-Intermediate program to the paramedic level. Invasive skills and comprehensive assessments are taught to enable the student to provide advanced life support to the ill or injured patient. Pre-requisites: Successful completion of Anatomy and Physiology for the EMS Professional or equivalent. High school diploma/GED, EMT credential, successful completion of an EMT-Intermediate course and successful completion of placement testing (Math, English and reading).
EMT-Basic Continuing Education
The EMT Basic Continuing Education course will fulfill the North Carolina requirements for EMT/Medical Responder recredentialing over a four year period. Students successfully completing the course may recertify without taking the State EMT exam. Classes meet once a month. Prerequisite: NC EMT or MR credential.
Emergency Medical Dispatcher
This course prepares students as 911 emergency medical telecommunicators, providing medical instructions to 911 callers at the scene of an emergency, prior to the arrival of emergency responders.
Paramedic Continuing Education
This program offers a variety of emergency medical topics approved by the NC Office of EMS and taught throughout the year. The course provides paramedics and other medical professionals with continuing education mandated for recredentialing.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
This course is designed to educate emergency medical personnel, nurses, physicians and Respiratory therapists, in Advanced Cardiac Life Support through the American Heart Association guidelines. This course teaches the proper evaluation and advanced treatment skills for the cardiac patient.
ACLS Instructor
The ACLS Instructor course is designed to certify individuals to instruct the Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider course according to American Heart Association guidelines. Students receive instruction in educational methodology, the organization, components, and requirements of the ACLS Provider course, and skill station management. Pre-requisites: Current certifications in BCLS and ACLS.
CPR (Initial and Refresher)
This course teaches the student to recognize the signs and symptoms of heart attacks, strokes and how to perform CPR for adults, infants, and children, and provides refresher training for those needing renewal of their skills. This course meets the requirements mandated by the North Carolina Child Day Care Commission for child care providers.
CPR Instructor
This course is designed to certify individuals to instruct CPR courses through the American Heart Association. This course teaches instruction skills in general, as well as specific CPR teaching skills. Upon successful completion, the student will be awarded a CPR Instructor certificate. Pre-requisite: Current certification in Adult CPR (one and two-person), Infant CPR, and Child CPR.
First Aid
This course prepares students to perform basic first aid measures for emergency situations including choking, seizures, burns, bleeding, poisoning, and fractures. This course also meets the requirements mandated by the North Carolina Child Day Care Commission for child care providers.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
This American Heart Association course is designed to prepare healthcare providers to recognize and treat infants and children experiencing life-threatening medical emergencies. Emphasis is placed on recognition of signs and symptoms as well as invasive skills needed to stabilize the patient’s condition. Prerequisite: Credential/License as a Paramedic, RN, MD, or equivalent.
PALS Instructor
This course is designed to certify individuals to instruct the Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider course according to American Heart Association guidelines. Students receive instruction in educational methodology, the organization, components, and requirements of the PALS Provider course, and skill station management. Pre-requisites: Current PALS certification.
Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS Basic/Advanced)
This course teaches emergency medical personnel the proper evaluation and treatment of a patient who has sustained a traumatic injury. The course includes both basic and advanced life support procedures. State and National certifications are available. Prerequisite: EMT-I, Paramedic, RN, MD, or equivalent.
Emergency Vehicle Operator - Ambulance
This course is designed to teach defensive driving techniques, collision prevention, and operator responsibilities to those individuals who operate emergency vehicles, with special emphasis on the uniqueness of ambulances. Practical driving exercises will also maneuver the ambulance through an obstacle course. Prerequisite: Valid NC driver’s license.
