The Office Systems Technology curriculum prepares individuals for positions in administrative support careers. It equips office professionals to respond to the demands of a dynamic computerized workplace.

Students will complete courses designed to develop proficiency in the use of integrated software, oral and written communication, analysis and coordination of office duties and systems, and other support topics. Emphasis is placed on non-technical as well as technical skills.

Graduates should qualify for employment in a variety of positions in business, government, and industry. Job classifications range from entry-level to supervisor to middle management.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Jobs for Office Systems Technology graduates are available in business, government and industry throughout North Carolina. Positions like administrative assistants, secretaries, word processing operators, information processing specialist, receptionists, clerk typists, and data entry operators are found in local, state, and federal government offices, insurance companies, manufacturing businesses, real estate companies, educational institutions, health care facilities, and banking. Locally, starting salaries for graduates at in the $20,500 - $24,500 range.

COURSE INFORMATION

Major Courses

Office Systems Technology (Degree - 10 or 11 courses; Diploma - 7 courses; Basic Office Skills Certificate - 6 courses; Computer Software Applications Certificate - 3 courses). Degree, diploma, and certificate students study basic keyboarding; text entry and formatting; and word processing concepts and applications. Degree, diploma, and Basic Office Skills certificate students cover additional topics including an introduction to office systems; records management; the keypad and the touch method of using an electronic calculator. In addition, degree and diploma students take a course that supplies a comprehensive study of editing skills needed in the workplace. Degree students also study the use of software with desktop publishing capabilities; advanced word/information-processing functions, and have the option of a course in administrative office procedures, imaging, communication techniques, ergonomics, and equipment utilization.
Accounting (Degree - 1 course) - Students learn the basic principles and procedures of accounting, including collecting, summarizing, analyzing and reporting financial information.
Business (Degree - 1 course) - This course introduces the basic concepts of identity and communication in the business setting.
Computer Information Technology - (Degree and Diploma - 4 courses; Basic Skills Office Certificate - 1 course; Computer Software Applications Certificate - 3 courses) - Degree, diploma, and certificate students take an introductory course in computers and computing. Degree, diploma, and Computer Software Applications certificate students study database design and creation; and basic spreadsheet design and development. Degree and diploma students also study an introduction to graphic design and execution of pictorial graphics using a variety of software packages.
Cooperative Education (Degree - 1 course) - Degree students have the option of choosing work experience with a college-approved employer in place of a comparable on-campus class.
Marketing (Degree - 1 course) - This course stresses the importance of customer relations in the business world.

General Education Courses

Electives (Degree - 2 courses) - Office Systems Technology students are required to take one 3-credit-hour social/behavioral science course and one 3-credit-hour humanities/fine arts course.
English (Degree and Diploma - 2 courses) - These courses emphasize the writing process and professional communication skills.
Math (Degree - 1 course) - Survey of topics including sets, logic, probability, statistics, matrices, mathematical systems, geometry, topology, mathematics of finance, and modeling.
Spanish (Degree - 1 course) - This course provides an introduction to understanding, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish.
