The Advertising and Graphic Design curriculum is designed to
provide students with knowledge and skills necessary for employment
in the graphic design profession. Emphasizing design,
advertising, illustration, and digital and multimedia preparation
of printed and electronic promotional materials.
Students will be trained in the development of concept and design for promotional materials such as newspaper and magazine advertisements, posters, folders, letterheads, corporate symbols, brochures, booklets, preparation of art for printing, lettering and typography, photography, and electronic media.
Graduates qualify for employment opportunities with graphic design studios,
advertising agencies, printing companies, department stores, a wide variety of
manufacturing industries, newspapers, and businesses with in-house graphics operations.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES
The majority of jobs for Advertising and Graphic Design graduates will be found in companies such as advertising agencies or design studios, website design and management companies, newspapers, publishers, printing companies, and in-house art departments. Working hours are typically 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Overtime can be expected. Entry-level salaries average $18,000 - $23,000 per year. Salaries with five years experience range from $25,000 - $32,000 and vary widely with location, type of business and job responsibilities. Employment possibilities have generally been healthy. Typically 90% or more (and often (100%) of graduates have found employment. Employment potential is affected by local and national economic factors. Graduates have advanced in their careers to senior positions and many have opened their own successful businesses. Those who have desired to continue their education at a four-year college or university have done so successfully.
COURSE INFORMATION
Major Courses
- Foundation Design (Degree - 2 courses) -
These courses introduce:
- the basic concepts and
- terminology of design
- including line, pattern, space, mass, shape, texture, color, unity,
variety,
- Plus, rhythm, emphasis, balance, proportion, scale, function,
and color theory.
- Cooperative Education (Degree - 1 course)
Advertising & Graphic Design students have the option of choosing
work experience with a college-approved employer in place of a comparable
on-campus class.
- Graphic Design (Degree - 11 courses)
These courses include exploration of opportunities in the
graphic design field:
- drawing fundamentals the application of rendering
techniques to create illustrations,
- the application of visual elements
and
- design principles,
- technical and industrial illustration techniques,
- exploration of various techniques and media, and
- fundamentals
of multimedia design and production for computer-related presentations.
- One
course emphasizes the organization and presentation of a portfolio,
development of a resume, and employment interview procedures.
- A typography course introduces the history and mechanics
of type, and an advertising course explores the origins, roles,
scope, forms, and development of advertising.
- Graphic Arts (Degree - 7 courses)
These
courses include four courses in:
- computer graphics with topics including:
- the use of hardware and software for production
- design
and advanced design
- layout concepts utilizing illustration,
- page layout, and imaging software.
- Other graphic arts courses:
provide hands-on training and
- cover terminology,
- tools and
materials,
- procedures, and
- equipment used in graphic arts production.
General Education Courses
- Art (Degree - 1 course)
This is an Art Appreciation course
- An introduction to the origins and
- historical development of art.
- Elective (Degree - 1 course)
Advertising & Graphic
Design students are required to take:
- one 3-credit-hour social/behavioral
science course.
- English (Degree - 2 courses)
These courses
emphasize on:
- the writing process and
- professional communication skills.
- Math (Degree - 1 course)
This course
develops the ability to:
- utilize mathematical skills and
- technology
to college problems at a level found in non-mathematical-intensive
programs.
