A25170 Degree (Day, Evening and Online)

The Business Administration curriculum is designed to introduce students to the various aspects of the free enterprise system. Students will be provided with a fundamental knowledge of business functions, processes and an understanding of business organizations in today’s global economy.

Course work includes business concepts such as accounting, business law, economics, management and marketing. Skills related to the application of these concepts are developed through the study of computer applications, communication, team building and decision making.

Through these skills, students will have a sound business education base for lifelong learning. Graduates are prepared for employment opportunities in government agencies, financial institutions, and large to small business or industry.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Business Administration graduates will find the entire range of above-average, average and below-average employment opportunities in business-related careers. The growth rate for employment in North Carolina in the fastest growing occupations ranges from 3% to approximately 7%. Employment opportunities exist in a wide range of businesses, government offices, public firms, banks and credit unions, life insurance companies, hospitals, schools/colleges, and industries. The need for business graduates can be found in any setting where organization, management and/or accounting skills are utilized. Average annual national salary for someone with an associate in applied science degree in Business Administration is approximately $26,000. Locally, starting annual salaries for graduates in 2001 were in the $16,000 – $27,000 range. Working conditions will vary depending on position and industry. However, most of the positions will be in an office setting with working hours of 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Major Courses

Accounting (Degree - 3 courses) - Students learn the basic principles and procedures of accounting, including collecting, summarizing, analyzing and reporting financial information, and corporate and managerial accounting for both external and internal reporting and decision making. Students also will study federal income taxes for individuals, partnerships and corporations.
Business (Degree - 7 courses) - Two courses in business law include contracts, negotiable instruments, Uniform Commercial Code, the working of the court systems, bailments, sales, risk-bearing, forms of business ownership and copyrights. Two courses in business management cover the management functions of planning, organizing, controlling, directing and communicating, and the impact of different management practices and leadership styles. Other business courses include a survey of the business world, an overview of business financial management, and human resource management.
Economics (Degree - 1 course) - This course introduces economic analysis of aggregate employment, income and prices.
Computer Information Technology (Degree - 2 courses) - Topics include an introduction to computers and computing, and basic spreadsheet design and development.
International Business (Degree - 1 course) - This course provides an overview of the environment, concepts, and basic differences involved in international business.
Marketing & Retailing (Degree - 2 courses) - One course introduces principles and problems of marketing goods and services. The second course is designed to emphasize the necessity of selling skills in a modern business environment.
Office Systems Technology (Degree - 2 courses) - Topics include basic keyboarding skills and word processing concepts and applications.

General Education Courses

Electives (Degree - 2 courses) - Business Administration students are required to take a 3-credit-hour humanities/fine arts course and a 3-credit-hour social/behavioral science course.
English (Degree - 2 courses) - These courses emphasize the writing process and professional communication skills.
Math (Degree - 1 course) - Survey of topics including sets, logic, probability, statistics, matrices, mathematical systems, geometry, topology, mathematics of finance, and modeling.
