Anatomy & Physiology for EMS Professionals

This course provides a basic study of the structure and function of the human body. The curriculum consists of objectives from Appendix E of the 1998 Release of the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT-Paramedic: NSC. Topics include a basic study of the body systems as well as an introduction to homeostasis, cells, tissues, nutrition, acid-base balance, and electrolytes. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the fundamental principles of anatomy and physiology. This course is a prerequisite for EMS 3031, Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic Initial.This course may be taken as an elective for the Medical Office Assistant program.

Prerequisite: Medical Coding for Physicians Office
The student will gain an in-depth knowledge of both Level I and Level II HCPCS from coding to Medicaid and Medicare regulations pertaining to HCPCS. The student will have a thorough knowledge of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Web site and free resources available through CMS and will learn to navigate the Medicare Claims Processing Manual. The basic principles and conventions of CPT coding, illustrations of applications of these principles with examples and exercises based on actual case documentation, and information on how to analyze clinical data for the purposes of coding and reimbursement are all included in this course.

This class conforms to the Health Unit Coordinator national certification exam content outline that is based on the national job analysis performed by the Certification Board's testing agency. This course focuses on processing inpatient and outpatient services for acute, subacute, long-term care, and specialty and clinic facilities using the Uniform Bill-92 or UB92. It exposes learners to many provider specialties to build familiarity with any unique requirements of the specialties. Another objective is to provide the practice necessary to build learner confidence in claims processing procedures. Learners will be able to adapt to different care environments and understand the logic used by insurance companies to determine coverage.

This class provides an extensive framework of drug information in a concise format. Calculations are simplified into step-by-step processes. Drugs are organized by classifications and include their purpose, side effects, cautions, and interactions. This terminology includes new drugs, information about the uses and effects of herbs, and the USP Quality Review list of similar drug names. The class examines the Internet as a reference tool and directs students to reliable Web sites, provides case studies to stimulate critical thinking, and includes an activity CD-ROM which provides interactive exercises to enhance the learning experience.
