Auto Safety Inspection and OBD Certification

N.C. residents 65 years or older are exempt from registration fees in some classes. Please ask when you register if your class is exempt.

Students taking Auto Safety, OBD Certification, or any recertification should apply the following criteria in selecting the appropriate course:

1. If you need both the initial Auto Safety Inspection and the OBD certifications, then take the entire 16 hours of the Auto Safety Inspection and OBD Emissions Certification Course.
2. If you need only the initial Auto Safety Inspection certification, then you will take the first 8 hours (first 2 sessions) of the Auto Safety Inspection and OBD Emissions Certification Course.
3. If you need only the initial OBD Emissions certification, then you must take the last 8 hours (last 2 sessions) of the Auto Safety Inspection and OBD Emissions Certification Course.
4. If you need to recertify as an Auto Safety Inspector, then you will take the first 8 hours (first 2 sessions of the Auto Safety Inspection and OBD Emissions Certification Course. Auto Safety Inspectors must recertify every four years.
5. If you need to recertify for the OBD Emissions, then you must take the OBD Emissions Recertification class (1- 4 hrs class). OBD Emissions Inspectors must recertify every two years.

Students taking both the Auto Safety Certification and OBD will be required to pay only one $65 registration fee. Students needing Auto Safety Inspection only will attend the first two class sessions. Students needing OBD Emissions Certification only will attend the last two class sessions.

Auto Safety & OBD Emissions Control Inspection

($65 + $20 book for OBD if needed)
Prepares auto technicians and service personnel as safety inspectors for motor vehicles. Includes rules, regulations, and methods of inspection. Students must successfully pass a qualification examination for certification as a safety inspector at a licensed inspection station. Students taking both the Auto Safety Certification and OBD will be required to pay only one $65 registration fee plus the $20 materials fee for OBD, if needed (students may use their station's OBD Manual). Students needing Auto Safety Inspection only will attend the first two class sessions. Students needing OBD Emissions Certification only will attend the last two class sessions.
