Elementary Chinese I

This course is designed for students at the beginning level who wish to learn Modern Standard Chinese (or Mandarin) for their own interests or business and to understand the culture and society in which the Chinese language is spoken. The class focuses on Chinese as spoken in day-to-day life. A multi-skills teaching approach is used, giving equal emphasis to the training of standard pronunciation, listening comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary usage. The goal is for students to acquire these skills in the context of useful daily conversation. By the end of the term, 200 new Chinese characters will have been taught through classroom instruction and individual practice.
