This course provides theory and clinical experiences needed for the proper collection of blood and other specimens used for diagnostic testing. Emphasis is placed on ethics, legalities, medical terminology, safety and universal precautions, health care delivery systems, patient relations, anatomy and physiology, and specimen collection. Upon completion, students should be able to safely perform procedures necessary for specimen collections on patients in various health care settings and may be eligible for national certification as phlebotomy technicians. CPR will be taught as part of the class and will be on a Saturday. Students must have a flexible schedule for the duration of the course, which is 200 hours long. The class size is limited - first qualified, first enrolled. Classroom portion is taught at the Archdale Center. All clinicals will be in Asheboro. Course has multiple requirements that must be met prior to starting the class, to include reading and math assessments, a medical physical and specific immunizations that can take up to six months to complete. Scholarships are available if qualified.
