This course provides a basic study of the structure and function of the human body. The curriculum consists of objectives from Appendix E of the 1998 Release of the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT-Paramedic: NSC. Topics include a basic study of the body systems as well as an introduction to homeostasis, cells, tissues, nutrition, acid-base balance, and electrolytes. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the fundamental principles of anatomy and physiology. This course is a prerequisite for EMS 3031, Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic Initial.

Costs of the course- tuition- $175/semester(4 semesters) (unless fee exempt),supply fee- $100, liability insurance- $16-annually (required), accident insurance- $1.25/semester (4 semesters). Course will meet one evening each week (Thursday) 6 pm til 10 pm and one weekend each month (Saturday & Sunday) to be held at the Main Campus in Asheboro.

Students will review basic emergency care skills, study updates, the use of new equipment, and problem areas working toward recertification as a North Carolina EMT. This course will follow the guidelines established by the N.C. office of EMS and the local EMS system. In addition to on-campus classes, this course will offered as a hybrid course consisting of online and face-to-face meetings. Students will complete the necessary practical evaluations and scope of practice evaluations during the face-to-face sessions. Student prerequisites: currently or previously credentialed (within the last 3 years) as a N.C. EMT or higher, high school diploma or GED, or successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension skills at a minimum tenth grade level.

This course will follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS and the local EMS System. This course will be offered as a hybrid course consisting of online and evaluations during face-to-face sessions.
