Did you know that most truckers earn an average of $35,800 a year their first year on the road?
After just a few years, you can make an average of $45,000-$50,000 annually.
Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers drive a tractor-trailer combination or a truck with a capacity of at least 26,000 GVW, to transport and deliver goods, livestock, or materials in liquid, loose, or packaged form.
They may be required to unload the truck and it might require the use of automated routing equipment.
Truck drivers might drive locally or they may find themselves on the road for two weeks at a time.
Truck sizes also vary and different loads make different demands on the driver.
So how do you get into truck driving?
A commercial driver's license is required. That's where Randolph Community College comes in. RCC provides this training in partnership with Crosscountry Truck Driving School in Thomasville. Classes are held at RCC's Asheboro Campus or Archdale Center.
The Truck Driving Training Program includes two segments: classroom and driving. Students are trained on a variety of equipment including tanker, flatbed, dry van, and refrigerated units.
Before enrolling, students must have and are responsible for the cost of the following:
- Valid driver's license
- Social security card
- Department of Transportation (DOT) drug test
- Department of Transporation (DOT) physical
- Criminal background check
- CDL-Permit with tanker endorsement by the second week of class
The tuition for the truck driving training program is $2,290, which includes the use of a truck, fuel for driver training, and accident insurance. This price is subject to change depending on diesel fuel prices.
