Certified Manager Program

The Certified Manager program is sponsored locally by Randolph Community College in cooperation with the Institute of Certified Professional Managers on the campus of James Madison University. The designation of Certified Manager is similar to that of the Certified Public Accountant designation granted to professionals in accounting. To qualify, you must meet minimum professional standards of education, experience, character, and competence.

Becoming a Certified Manager involves two stages. In the first stage, you must file an application with the Institute of Certified Managers. If the application is approved by the Institute, a student may earn the CM designation by passing examinations in Management Skills I, II, and III.

The courses offered by Randolph Community College are designed to help managers prepare for the three exams and earn the CM designation. However, the courses may be taken for personal and professional development even though you do not plan to take the CM certification exams. Each course covers important aspects of general management skills, but the CM examinations are not based solely on information taught in management courses. These exams also assess your understanding of common management situations.

Courses include Foundations of Management, Planning and Organizing, Leading and Controlling. Courses may be taken in any sequence. It is strongly recommended that students have three or more years of experience as a supervisor or manager prior to taking the certification exams.
