Basic Skills Programs
Compensatory Education
The Compensatory Education program is designed to provide developmentally disabled students with the basic skills and prevocational training necessary to attain a level of independence and self-sufficiency.
The curriculum used as a basis for instruction was developed specifically for the program and is continually updated to be applicable and current. The curriculum covers reading, language arts, math, science, consumer education, health, vocational education and community living skills. In addition to academic studies, RCC students also receive vocational training in horticulture, sewing, coking, computers and job exploration.
To be eligible to participate in the Compensatory Education Program, an individual must be 17 or older, and (a) diagnosed with intellectual disabilities (formerly called mental retardation) or (b) functioning on a level equivalent to intellectual disabilities resulting from head injury or brain damage. Randolph Community College is required by the North Carolina Community College System Audit Services to have on file proof of eligibility. This condition must be determined and certified by a qualified professional, such as a physician, psychiatrist, psychologist, etc. and must have been documented within the past ten years. Classes are offered in the Asheboro and Archdale areas. For more information about the program, please call 336-633-0254.
